Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has hit the top of the UK video game charts with the fourth biggest launch of all time.

The game was only beaten by its predecessors, Black Ops 1, Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3.

The release was called the biggest entertainment launch of 2012 by publishers Activision, after it racked up $500m in 24 hours worldwide.

The massive success of the game beats that of Halo 4, which launched the previous week and also recorded massive sales.

Microsoft's action shooter was pushed down to second place in the charts, followed by FIFA 13 and Assassin's Creed 3.

Also new in the charts were The SIms 3: Seasons (9) and the PS Vita's Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified at 16.

Meanwhile Sony's Wonderbook debut, the Harry Potter-inspired Book of Spells made it to 25 in the charts.
