DESIGNER: Rodarte by Kate and Laura Mulleavy
INSPIRATION: Prairie home companions with a nod to Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz"
WHO WAS THERE: Kirsten Dunst, Sofia Coppola and Karen Elson.
TOP LOOKS: Cream-colour crinkled chiffon dress worn under a square pony-hair tank top and matching apronlike skirt; yellow sequin dress with open-back draping; slim-fitting high-waist trousers with V-neck cut-out blouses; sparkling homages to Dorothy's ruby-red shoes, our favourite being a crepe top with a sequin skirt featuring horse-hair trim
ACCESSORIES: Nicholas Kirkwood's playful fashion version of the cowboy boot - tall, laced and beaded, with cut-outs or adorned with pony hair
WHAT WE THOUGHT: The sisters Mulleavy never lack creativity, but their whimsical clothing, stunning though it may be, is essentially created for the high-fashion strata and editorial spreads. For this collection, however, they kept their feet on terra firma and drew inspiration from the American plains. The result? Floor-sweeping prairie dresses (many bearing a wheat-field print), floral lace and linen blouses with full skirts, and a bountiful selection of pony and horsehair accents, including matching apron-like tops and bottoms. This season's Rodarte crop was nostalgic, dreamy and, most important, wearable.
