The Pinterest Backlash: Condescending Wonka Memes
|

The backlash against Pinterest has begun and as per the rules of the internet, it's being expressed in memes.

Condescending Wonka meme is leading the anti-pinning mood, with a range of snarky comments about pinning and those who love to pin.

The rash of Wonka memes tap into the braggier side of Pinterest. One reads "Oh, you're new to Pinterest? I've been pinning for a year." Another reads "I pinned it first", while one brags about a Pinterest superuser re-pinning someone's pin - a kind of re-tweet for Pinterest.

It has not gone unnoticed by meme-makers that sticking images to Pinterest is perhaps not the most original passtime, as fun as it may be. Plenty of these memes play on that notion, memifying the notion by highlighting the fact that Pinners not only often don't own the images they pin, they don't own the objects in the photographs.

One picks on interior design fetishists who re-pin fancy furniture, reading "Oh you have a Le Corbusier chair? I pinned that ages ago."

While Pinterest's terms and conditions say it "respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects its users to do the same", that doesn't stop Pinterest users re-pinning their favourite images without checking the copyright details for each.
