A Classics student will be used to all kinds of abuse from their fellow students: "Latin's a dead subject", "All you're doing is reading old books and looking at pots", "It's not even a real degree".
But ancient Greece and Rome mark the beginning of civilisation as we know it. We study the history of an ancient culture, which involves history, literature, philosophy and the development of languages.
Studying Latin and Greek helps scholars unravel ancient texts - English students read books, right? In addition to this, learning an ancient language helps us to understand where our own came from.
Reading about ancient war heroes and their feats by reading Homer's Iliad and Odyssey helps us to understand how our ancestors lived - from their food and clothing to their politics and moral values, which directly impact the way we live today.
Stoicism, an ancient philosophy, involves the development of meditation and learning how to become at peace with ourselves - valuable life skills.
So basically, we can daydream about being an ancient war hero, dress up in our bedsheets and - best of all - insult you in Latin without you realising it.
