We like to think of nutrition and 'healthy eating' in the same way. At the Female Fitness Academy we are NOT advocates of deprivation dieting and the removal of foods from the diet in order to lose weight, fit in a dress or conform to societal pressures and numbers on a scale.

No matter how many people tell you that something is good for you, will make you lose weight, will improve your life, will make you millions etc. If you don't enjoy it then you are less likely to keep it up.

I try and follow the same approach now with my two daughters, however this IS a deliberate tact from us as parents. There are so many references to weight on TV, media and generally from people in and around our family circle that it could so easily have an unconscious influence on my daughters.

I have always found it really hard to switch off and totally relax. As a working mum of two small children, running my own business and co-running a family with my husband - it's non-stop, and I know that's the same for most of the mums I work with.

If you are hoping for a really cool fitness gift this year, please do not rely on him figuring it out for himself. No matter how well he knows you, that's just too risky. If you are not specific about what is a good/bad buy then you too could end up with a sauna suit or some other horrific gadget that claims to turn you into a Victoria's secret model in a day.

As a personal trainer, I feel immense pressure to keep in shape and practice what I preach. Ultimately, people are paying for me to help them to do the same so in a way my own physique is part of my professionalism.
