Gavin Callaghan is a Councillor and former leader of Basildon Borough Council in Essex. The challenge now is to take Corbyn's message of hope to the towns and to do it in a way that really does resonate. To make that work he will require the services of Yvette Cooper, Rachel Reeves, Dan Jarvis, Chuka Ummuna and several of the other big Labour thinkers who have spent the last two years working on exactly the issues in the towns that I've described here.

In the end, whatever the opinion polls say and whatever happens on June 8th, lessons must be learnt from the Osborne fallacy. The rhetoric must match the reality and if that happens then the public will be in no doubt that Theresa May is a lot of things, but strong and stable, she most certainly isn't.

Labour needs someone who is aspiration personified - the comprehensive kid who went to Cambridge and then sat at the cabinet table. Someone who at a time of unprecedented cynicism in politics is authentic and natural. Someone who hasn't just read about working class people in a university textbook but who understands working class people.
