A British man has accidentally killed his wife by running her over while they were on holiday in Greece, reports claim.

The couple were staying at a villa on the Greek island of Skiathos and coming home from a night out when the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police spokesman Chryssa Panayiotou told the Greek City Times: “An inquiry is being conducted. It seems to have been an accident. The 58-year-old woman was lying on the ground when her 62-year-old husband drove into her, not knowing she was there.”

She added that though the man had been charged with involuntary manslaughter, the authorities were treating the case as an accident. He has been released pending a trial and has undergone medical tests to ascertain the alcohol levels in his blood.

Police officer Vayia Zigra told The Sun: “She appears to have been prone when he inadvertently hit her, causing fatal injuries.

“That suggests she may have got out of the car and fainted. She is believed to have died on the spot. It’s a very bizarre, very sad incident.”

An FCO spokesperson said: “Our staff are offering support to a British man in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”
