Channel 4 has delivered some cracking news following Tuesday’s Derry Girls finale, confirming that a third series will be made.

The emotional closing episode saw the gang getting ready for Bill Clinton’s arrival in Derry and as usual, there were plenty of laughs, stellar one-liners and wonderfully bonkers Aunt Sarah moments.

Announcing the third series, writer Lisa McGee said: “I love writing this show and I’m so thrilled to be able to continue the Derry Girls story, thank you Channel 4, Erin and the eejits live to fight another day!”

Channel 4′s director of programmes, Ian Katz, added: “At a time of great uncertainty about the future of the country thank god we have one unequivocally good piece of news to look forward to: the Derry Girls will be back to make our lives a bit brighter and more fun.”

Series two of Derry Girls launched with a premiere episode watched by 3.2 million viewers, which made it Channel 4’s biggest UK comedy launch episode for 15 years.

Back in February, Lisa revealed that she did have an end point for the show in mind.

Speaking to an audience of fans and journalists at Bafta’s London HQ in February, she said: “I definitely have an end point I’d like to get to.

“I sort of thought I would follow the political broad story where I would like to take it.

“The girls will stay around that age, maybe get a year or two older. I would be disappointed if I didn’t get to there.”
