During the month we (Muslims) train ourselves, train ourselves to have restraint, train ourselves to have patience and steer clear from basic desires. The desire to eat, the desire to drink, the desire to argue back when under attack, the desire to indulge curbing our enthusiasm for all of these things until the set time and realizing that in actuality we are in no need of most of these desires.
Though Dickens would surely be glad to find that children are no longer sent to workhouses he would still find hungry kids and their parents in want of more food at dinnertime.
Our society has built up an image of beauty that even starving popstars can't achieve. And when they try to, we castigate them for it. And the negative impact that this has on children and others is perpetuating the message that weight loss is about starvation and deprivation.
