Starting at midnight on June 13, women in Switzerland began a series of demonstrations to protest gender-based workplace inequality. According to a World Economic Forum report, Switzerland ranks 44th for wage equality in a 2018 study of 149 countries. Despite enacting gender equality laws in 1991, Swiss women still earn on average 20% less than their male counterparts.
The 2019 Cannes Film Festival opened on 14 May, with Jim Jarmusch’s ‘The Dead Don’t Die’. Amidst all the usual glitz and glamour though, this year’s opening was a somewhat low-key affair as controversies over gender equality and the clout of streaming services like Netflix have overshadowed the famous French festival.
Our failure to tackle this issue is primal and based on ideas of what men and women are worth according to centuries-old stereotypes designed to limit all of our choices.
