TORQUAY, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 28: Roger Helmer MEP and UKIP Energy and Industry spokesman speaks at the UKIP 2014 Spring Conference at the Riviera International on February 28, 2014 in Torquay, England. Ukip announced last week that the MEP Roger Helmer, who is currently at the centre of a homophobia row, will contest the Newark parliamentary by-election in a bid to become the partys first ever MP. He has denied climate change, suggested that some women “share a part of the responsibility” if they are raped and compared homophobia to disliking Earl Grey tea.

But now Roger Helmer has made what could be his most outrageous statement yet.

Following the death of several migrants at the French port of Calais, the Ukip MEP tweeted:

roger helmer

Many were quick to suggest that they believed the backward-looking opinion simply fitted in with Ukip’s overall outlook…

Others simply pointed out the historical issues with Helmer’s tweet…

Some also questioned if Helmer was simply advocating an out-and-out war with France:
