Kerry Katona fought her way into the spotlight after a hard start in life. From her pop band beginnings to bankruptcy by way of jungle japes, twice-married mum-of-four Kerry shared her story through multiple reality TV shows.
Kerry had an unsettled childhood, brought up by four sets of foster parents after living through difficult circumstances with mum Sue. Kerry became a lap dancer at 16, tried out glamour modelling and finally found fame when she joined Atomic Kitten aged 18 in 1999. She released just one album with the group before leaving at the start of 2001.
Kerry fell in love with Westlife’s Brian McFadden and in 2001 she gave birth to Molly. The couple married in 2002, and daughter Lilly-Sue arrived in February the following year. Kerry was crowned Queen of the Jungle on I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here in February 2004, then landed a deal with Iceland supermarket and an OK! column, before splitting with Brian in September.
From 2007 Kerry invited cameras into her life for reality shows that documented her bipolar disorder and relationship with new man, Mark Croft. They wed on Valentine’s Day 2007 in Gretna Green, and six days later their daughter Heidi was born. Their son, Maxwell, was born five weeks prematurely in 2008. That August Kerry was declared bankrupt and in October her slurred speech on This Morning sparked suggestions of drug or alcohol addiction, but the official line claimed prescription medication was to blame. Iceland dropped her following cocaine allegations in 2009.
After splitting from Mark for good in February 2010, she admitted taking cocaine during her marriage but was on the road to recovery. She then lost weight for a fitness DVD and competed in 2011’s Dancing on Ice. The summer of 2011 saw her enter the Celebrity Big Brother house, where she finished second.
