There's nothing worse than feeling neglected and unvalued at your workplace, especially when you're giving it your all.
Some reported discomfort due to their bosses not thinking beyond the "simply getting the job done" attitude, a survey of more than 3,000 employees found.
The study, by Investors in People, showed that 54% of those polled believed their employer did not care about their health, leaving many feeling less motivated.
Most sickness absence was genuine, although those unhappy in their job were more likely to feign illness, said the report.
Paul Devoy, head of Investors in People, said: "Organisations need to see staff health and well-being as crucial to their business and staff retention.
"Our research shows that happier staff are less likely to take time off sick. What's more, companies offering health and well-being perks will see real business benefits.
"They don't have to be costly - desk posture assessment and support or complimentary fresh fruit in the office can have real positive impact on an employee's health and make them feel valued."
