Trying to reduce your sugar intake while satisfying your sweet tooth? There’s a new version of Cadbury Dairy Milk that can help – but expect it to be smaller than the original.

The new Cadbury Dairy Milk with 30% less sugar may help you cut back on the sweet stuff, but the bar is 35g, compared to a standard Dairy Milk that’s 45g.

The calorie content remains similar between the two bars, but the sugar content has dropped from 56g per 100g in the original bar to 39g per 100g in the new version.

Cadbury owner Mondelez International has described the new bar as the “most significant innovation in the brand’s history” amid similar sugar reduction plans for other lines such as Oreo and Maynards Bassetts Wine Gums and Jelly Babies products.

The new Dairy Milk bar will sit alongside the original on shelves, so it’s up to you whether you stick with your first love or opt for the healthier (smaller) version.

Some of the sugar has been replaced with fibre to maintain the structure and texture of the original, but Mondelez describes the taste of the new bar as “incredibly similar”.

A team of 20 scientists, nutritionists and chocolatiers worked for almost two years at the firm’s Reading and Bournville facilities to cut sugar without adding any artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives.

The firm announced the new bar last year, the month after the government unveiled the second phase of proposals to halve childhood obesity by 2030.
