Vertu 'Constellation' Phone Costs £4095 But Is Decidedly Averagely Specced

£4095 For A Phone

Usually titanium, sapphire crystal and calf's leather are reserved for the realms of private jets and luxury cars.

But English company Vertu has felt the need to create a mobile phone with said pricey materials.

It's new Constellation smartphone is a finely crafted and undoubtedly beautiful contraption that costs a whopping £4095.

Which begs the question: Why is it specced so badly?

Beneath the bling and fine materials lie a distinctly average 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch 720p display and 32GB of storage.

It does come with a 13 megapixel camera and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS but this is hardly groundbreaking. You might have at least expected a 1080p screen, or the latest version of Android 4.3 for the equivalent cost of about six unlocked Galaxy Note 3s.

But we suspect the kind of person to buy one will not be much bothered by such things.

It also comes with the rather pretentious sounding Vertu Life and Certainty services - Life gets you int private members' clubs and the like, and Certainty provides device security.

Of course if this still isn't enough for you there is always the company's £6,782 Vertu Ti...

Diamond Crypto: $1.3mIn 2006 the Diamond Crypto was launched by Russian firm JSC Ancort, for the low price of just over a million dollars. The phone was based on Windows CE, making it immediately irrelevant, but it did come coated in 50 diamonds (including 10 blue diamonds) so the resale value was probably higher than anything you own. Also released in 2006, the Vertu Cobra cost about $310,000 and featured more than 439 rubies. The company only made eight, but we're guessing they sold at least a couple. Vertu, a subsidiary of Nokia, has since run into trouble and The Verge recently reported it may be up for sale for $200m - a price which would not buy many more than a thousand of its recent signature 'Dragon' device.
