Society Is Letting Autistic People

Society Is Letting Autistic People Down

Transitions to adulthood are a vital area where much more needs to be done. There is very little information on whether children find it easier to work in certain professions (for example ones where routine and structure is required). Only by learning more about how autistic children do later in life can we make sure that their education is sufficiently tailored to maximise the chances of them entering the workplace successfully. Only a combination of more resources, more dedication, more support and more understanding will help ensure that every autistic child lives a life worth living.

Our Reaction To The US Election Must Be To Defend Openness Wherever We Can

Much ink has been spilt about Donald Trump's more outrageous outbursts - whether directed against women, Muslims, the disabled and many others. We must not allow such sentiments to cross the Atlantic... The response to the US election must be to defend openness however we can - at home and abroad. In our own small way, we will start on Saturday. I would urge all who share our vision for this country to join us.

Mental Health Trusts' Alarming Spike in Serious Incidents Must Be Taken Seriously

Errors and weaknesses in healthcare will inevitably happen, but there can be no reason to tolerate serious incidents on this scale - particularly those involving unexpected deaths and fatal self-harm. In government, I was determined to end the historic injustice against those suffering mental ill health. It is time for people of every stripe to pull together to complete the job.

This World AIDS Day, We're Calling for the NHS to Supply Drugs That Could Thousands of Lives

While making PrEP available is ultimately a decision for NHS England, rather than for politicians, I hope they will take steps to make PrEP available to people considered to be at high risk of catching the virus, without further delay. This could have an enormous impact on the lives of countless numbers of people in high-risk groups and be a vast improvement on our current approach, which wastes NHS resources and has let down far too many people.

Equality for Mental Health - An Historic Opportunity to Deliver Real

Equality for Mental Health - An Historic Opportunity to Deliver Real Change

I know from personal experience just how vital good mental health care is for families across the UK. One in four people experience poor mental health at some time in their lives and this means that everyone knows somebody who has had a mental health problem. Yet for far too long our society has not prioritised mental health care. For decades, it has been at the back of the queue for funding and the front of the queue for cuts.

We Must Keep Fighting for Equality Between Mental and Physical Health

The truth is that there is outrageous discrimination at the heart of the NHS. If you have suspected cancer you have a right to see a specialist within two weeks - and rightly so. But if you are a teenager with an eating disorder - a condition which can kill - you have no such right. It's impossible to justify that.

We Must Ensure That, Across Europe, Liberalism and Humanity Prevail Over Division and Fear

As I write this article, I am on the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels. You might think this a strange diversion in the final week of my campaign to become leader of the Liberal Democrats. But today's trip is at the very heart of why I want to lead our party. Because whether we are a party of eight MPs or 208, we cannot hope to address so many of the challenges we face as a society on our own. The great threats of the coming decade - global climate change, mass migration, international economic upheaval, and a deteriorating security situation - are international challenges, requiring international solutions.

It's Time to Halve the Prison

It's Time to Halve the Prison Population

There can be no other area of public policy, with the exception of the related issue of drugs reform, where establishment politicians so readily bang the drum for the exact opposite of any evidence-based solution. Our prisons clearly fail to rehabilitate: half of those released reoffend within a year, including six in ten of those on sentences of less than twelve months. Liberal Democrats must lead the call for drastic and urgent action to reduce crime, protect victims more effectively, help criminals turn their lives around and protect taxpayers money: we must push for a Ministry of Justice target to halve the prison population by 2025.

The Liberal Democrats Are on a Mission to End Discrimination Against Mental Health

This has probably been the first ever election where mental health has started to be recognised as the crucial issue it is for millions of people across the country. It has been fantastic to see the focus here on the Huffington Post on mental health. But we have to make sure that this apparent consensus leads to action.

Mental Health Must Become a Key Issue in This Election - I'm Proud to Say the Lib Dems Have Thrown Down the Gauntlet

With mental illness costing our economy over £100 billion pounds a year and millions of lives put on hold because there isn't the right support, we desperately need to accelerate the pace of change. That's why mental health must become a key issue in this election campaign, and I'm proud to be able to say that the Lib Dems have thrown down the gauntlet. To keep on delivering a stronger economy and a fairer society, mental health has to take centre stage.

Decades of Not Understanding Mental Health Has Left Too Many Unhelped - But We Are Getting There

There is a welcome change happening in the way we talk about mental health and the amount we are talking about it. The stigma of mental health problems is still stubbornly there but I see so many reasons to be positive because things are changing. Yes, we need to go faster and decades of not understanding enough about mental health has meant too many people haven't been helped. But we are getting there, changing attitudes and revolutionising a system set up solely for physical health.

Finally, Mental Health Is in the Headlines for the Right Reasons

Today I am issuing a challenge. I want all FTSE 100 companies to sign up to Time to Change. The tens of millions of people who support them to be in that elite club work in incredibly demanding circumstances. Not only is it right their employees get the support and advice they need about their mental health, but the employers will set a shining example for the whole business sector to follow.
