We Need Stewardship In Statesmanship

With all the woes in the world -- nuclear standoffs to poor paying employment -- it's easy to become paralysed and apathetic. Worse: there's a nihilistic streak that undermines wellbeing when it is allowed to grow.

We Can Always Trounce The Tories

One election down, another probably on its way before too long. If the regressive alliance of the Conservatives and the DUP falls apart, then it's another chance to get a Labour government into power at Westminster. We need to take this chance and avoid screwing up electorally like Tory PMs do.

Vote For What Theresa May Believes In

Yes, Prime Minister. I couldn't agree with you more. We gain from Europe. We need to stop this economic self-amputation. This is the best chance we have. May has made this election a Brexit election, so tell her exactly what you think. Vote Lib Dem on the 8th of June and ask other people to do the same. We can stop a hard Brexit now.

How to Make Lemonade From a Leave Lemon

Yes, the EU's officials might refuse to negotiate, but that remains to be seen. It's the member states who are in charge within the EU. We're still a member of the EU until we choose to walk away. It's time to hustle. Who dares, wins.

Why I'm Backing This Wobbly EU Marriage

Political power belongs to voters, not officials. If a full EU state with all the trimmings is on the menu one day, then by all means, let's have a vote on it and decide what we want to do. And that's the most important thing about this referendum. Do ask what the EU should do for you, not what you should do for the EU. Whatever you think, vote. Democracy would be poorer without you.

Over One Million Britons Fed by Foodbanks - Why?

With over one million people using Trussell Trust Foodbanks, I couldn't help but reflect on what Jon said: he wanted to be out of a job for the right reasons. The Foodbank doesn't want to exist. Jon, however, looks like he might be working for a while yet.

All I Want For Christmas Is My Husband

For Brent and Sarah, the £18,600 threshold condemns their Christmas time to one carried out across the Atlantic. Instead of sharing a kiss, they will share a call. Instead of waking together, they will wake alone. It is a Christmas tale no one should ever endure. I hope that by Christmas 2015, common sense and not discrimination will prevail.

The NHS Needs to Keep an Eye on Its S

This morning, I was in Guy's hospital getting my blood taken. In the pleasantly clean and warm hospital, I waited along with my fellow patients to be served. The Guy's team has devised a way to prevent the testing queue descending into the budget airline scramble for the best seats of yore. In an ode to efficiency, they used a cheese counter-like ticket machine to give everyone a number. You pick it and you get called. At least it should be that simple.

Reform the UN Now

This isn't to kick sand over the UN. What Woodrow Wilson started with the League of Nations, and what became the United Nations, is our first real go in history of international peace. We haven't had WW3 yet.

Is Makeup Our Hijab?

Are we truly to believe that the world's women can't be beautiful without resorting to a bit of slap? Our continued existence and propensity for procreation suggests otherwise.

Benefit Scroungers Are Scum

£35bn vs. £1.3bn. Even an embryo could work out which is worse. While both scroungers are scum, perhaps it's time we recognised the brown elephant in the room of the 'negative scrounger' who is pilfering our pockets. They deserve all our loathing, if not more so, too.

The Sutton Trust Is Only Part Way There

We shouldn't demolish the private schools. Although some people out there probably want to see their alma maters razed, it would be a waste of good architecture. They just need to be forced into the wider education system like stuffing into a reluctant turkey. It might be a messy job, but the end result, a richer society, is worth it.

Patching Physicians' Pay

The turgid rebuttal is that the poorer paying NHS might lose the best doctors and harm our own health. Hogwash. You don't become a doctor to become a billionaire. And there's a whole world of bright medical practitioners out there. If people will not work for the NHS, there's plenty who would want to work in one the safest and richest countries in the world.

Give Power to Partnerships

Now that Npower has joined the rest of the gang in bumping up bills for Brits, isn't it time something was actually done about it? Yes, Ed's got his price freeze, and the Coalition have their 'wear jumpers to keep warm' enlightened scheme, but this is all a bit like tinkering with the clothing of the people on top of a wedding cake, when the bottom layer looks as if it's crumbling.
