Ted Cruz dropped out of the Republican primary race last night, effectively handing Donald Trump the nomination and his wife a big dose of elbow.

Admitting defeat at a speech in Indianapolis, Cruz said: "Tonight, I’m sorry to say that path has been foreclosed.

"We are suspending our campaign."

The Texas senator had mounted a massive last-ditch campaign to win the Indiana primary, even naming his running mate, Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, long before is traditional.

Candidates normally wait until they have amassed the the 1,237 delegates required to win.

Trump had nearly 1,000 delegates going into Tuesday and his strong showing last night should net him the vast majority of that state’s 57 and draw within 200 of the total needed.

According to a HuffPost poll, he has the support of more than half of Republicans nationwide.

Not long ago Cruz was seen as a strong contender for the nomination at a time when Trump's campaign was still seen as little more than a joke.

Announcing his intention to run in March of last year, he said: "What is the promise of America?

"The idea that — the revolutionary idea that this country was founded upon, which is that our rights don’t come from man.

"They come from God Almighty."

Cruz ran on a platform of social conservatism and religious liberty and was a staunch opposer of gay marriage.

He told a religious freedom rally in the key state of Iowa, during which he proclaimed that “there is a war on faith in America today, in our lifetime” and bemoaned the “persecution” of Christians.

Cruz also has a history of rather unfortunate physical encounters with member s of his family, completely messing up holding Heidi's hand...

And trying to hug his own daughter...
