What does this year hold for the urban innovation agenda in the UK? Like many others, I completely failed to predict the Brexit vote or the Trump Presidency. But I'm having another go at the crystal ball gazing this year because I still think it's useful to speculate about - and prepare for - the future. So, here are my five predictions for UK cities in 2017.
As we enter 2017, now is the perfect time to make sense of how the images we consume on a daily basis are evolving. It's always fascinating to plot the direction of change and predict which visual trends we'll be seeing this year in everything from the films we'll watch at the cinema to the adverts we'll see in print.
Call it an industry; call it a lifestyle; call it a combination of the two - whatever it is, health and wellness has its finger firmly on the pulse when it comes to moving with the times. This year kisses goodbye to seaweed and souping and waves hello to tiger nuts and super spices, just two of the wellbeing trends that look set to soar in 2017.
Whether you go Swedish with lagom or Danish with hygge, you are without doubt destined for great happiness (although where was hygge when Hamlet needed it?). This year has seen significant developments in the media industry that will have long lasting effects going well beyond 2016. Every major media trend from this past year centred around video, which now accounts for over two-thirds of all internet traffic. There's been three key trends that standout in my mind:
It's that time of year when friends and family go on holiday and social media is flooded with smart phone imagery of travel and adventures. This barrage of holiday snaps is not just limited to those from our loved ones, we're also seeing a whole range of imagery from brands and publications around particular travel themes. As travel imagery has its peak moment, our Creative Research team are exploring the visual trends happening in this space so far this summer.
We can expect these trends to evolve across 2016 but in a way they all identify or capture the contrasts faced by modern people; the yearning for individuality, the ability to control whether we are on the outside of the mainstream but also the need to seek community and engagement for the wider social good.
I'm always being asked what's 'new' in the world of wellness travel which makes it very inspiring to be part of and hopefully we are responsible for helping to set the trends too! The start of the year is a good time to think what lies ahead and I'd say these are the main trends that are coming to the fore:
