A former Warwick University professor and primary school governor has admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a young girl as well as possessing numerous images of extreme animal porn.

Dr Peter Johnston-Wilder previously worked as an associate professor of maths education at the Russell Group university. Wilder was also a governor at a primary school in Coventry.

Joining in 2006, he served on a subcommittee at the school, where he was responsible for health and safety. He also had "curriculum links" with the maths department, before being arrested in May this year.

At the Judge Trevor Faber ordered Wilder be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and a second charge of sexual activity with a child should lie on file.

The former professor from Styvechale, Coventry, will be sentenced in January.

CORRECTION: We previously stated Wilder worked as an associate professor in maths at Warwick, in fact he was an associate professor of maths education.
