Alex Blakemore

Geneticist, mother, grandmother

For her day job, Alex Blakemore is Professor of Human Molecular Genetics at Imperial College London. At home, she’s a besotted mother of four, and grandmother of four. Alex had an unusual route to academic success; after leaving school at 16 and becoming a mum at 19, she later completed her BSc and PhD as a lone parent. Alex is very active in supporting women in science, especially through Athena SWAN activities.
