Johnbosco Nwogbo currently teaches Philosophy at the University of Fort Hare. He will be pursuing a Ph.D in Philosophy at the University of Sussex, UK as of September 2017. He believes that the fight for tuition-free tertiary education in South Africa and the push to decolonise our curricula in every discipline, especially philosophy, are the civil rights struggles of these times. Furthermore, he is interested in philosophical discussions about ways to improve the material lives of impoverished South Africans, which is why he is increasingly attracted to the idea of the Universal Basic Income, and how it may be defended from the vantage point of South Africa’s fraught history. He is likewise interested in the role of money (or economic means) in democracies, and decries the virtual absence of any serious engagement with the question of money in most mainstream theories of democracy, from Rawls through Wiredu, to Mouffe.
