Kris van der Veen

Councillor, social worker and filmmaker

Kris van der Veen studied social work and sociology. For over ten years he works in the field of domestic violence, where he started as a social worker in a women shelter. Nowadays he manages prevention and education projects to prevent and stop domestic violence. Since 2011 he is a councilor in Groningen for a left wing party, called GroenLinks. The main topics he is involved with are youth, care, environment and nature.

Kris has always done a lot of volunteer work. For years he organized and initiated actions at Amnesty International, he talked with children at the Children's Telephone and these days he is the chairman of a regional LGBT-organisation.

In 2013 he met people from the Russian city of Murmansk. That's when he decided to make a documentary. About the recent 'anti-gaypropaganda'-law and the lives of Russians LGBT's (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender). In the summer of 2013 he and his crew became the first foreigners who were detained and held guilty for offending this law. The documentary '5000 Roebel' will be premiered in December 2013.
