Paul Miles

Life in the slow lane

Paul Miles lives on a 57ft narrowboat, continuously cruising the 2,000 miles of inland waterways in England and Wales. His travel writing and photography – on islands, sustainable travel and inland waterways - has appeared in most national newspapers, including the Sunday and Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and Financial Times as well as glossy magazines such as Condé Nast Traveller. His work on environmental issues and green building has appeared in The Ecologist, Financial Times/House & Home and Green Futures.

Having lived in the South Pacific for five years and visited over 70 countries, many of them remote and exotic, he now wants to spend more time exploring Britain, especially its inland waterways and islands. After years of jet-setting, he'd like to make a living from pootling along the canals and rivers at 4mph with two Labradors for company, his bicycle and a thriving vegetable garden on the roof and a wormery in the kitchen. He has never owned a car.

Although constant connectivity is not in the spirit of life at 4mph, he keeps an occasional blog about his travels and sometimes tweets @travel_n_green
