Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has given birth to a baby boy.

The prominent politician and her partner Jen Wilson are said to be “delighted” at the arrival of baby Finn Paul at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on Friday morning.

Posting on Twitter, Davidson said: “Welcome to the world, little one. Finn Paul Davidson, born today, 10lb 1.5oz. Know that you are loved.”

In a statement, Davidson thanked medics and said she was looking forward to taking their new baby home.

The 39-year-old said: “Jen and I are delighted at baby Finn’s safe arrival. A huge thank you to the medical team at the ERI and the midwives at Leith Community Treatment Centre for looking after all three of us so well throughout the pregnancy and birth.

“I can’t wait to get this little one home to enjoy some family time together.”

Wilson paid tribute to Davidson, and said: “It was wonderful to welcome baby Finn into the world this morning. He is beautiful and already very loved.

“Ruth did brilliantly and Finn clearly has his mother’s lungs on him.”

The couple, who live in Edinburgh, announced earlier this year that they were due to become parents after an IVF procedure had been successful.

Davidson has been on maternity leave since the Scottish Parliament’s October recess.

She previously said starting a family would not change her political commitment or her plans to lead the Scottish Conservatives into the 2021 Holyrood elections.

She and Wilson, who have been together since 2014, plan to share maternity leave, with Davidson’s deputy Jackson Carlaw holding the fort until her return to work.

Despite being repeatedly referred to as a future prime minister, Davidson ruled herself out of any run for the top job during a frank interview with the Sunday Times, saying she would prefer to concentrate on family and her health.
