In World Immunisation Week, I cannot overstate how vital it is to make that one last push we need to eradicate diseases like polio for good
Too often parents who remain worried by such claims believe they are erring on the side of caution by not vaccinating their child, believing that no harm can come from this. Yet by doing so they are inadvertently perpetuating the spread and the very existence of the disease, and through that human suffering. The fact is, a measles outbreak anywhere is a risk everywhere. Global health security means thinking globally and acting locally.
The hard-won battle to eradicate polio once and for all is within our grasp but we can't relax yet. We must, maintain and accelerate our efforts. So it is heartening to see Commonwealth countries, including the UK, coming together this weekend at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Malta to review the results achieved to date and call for renewed global support.
"Everyone is coming to get their children vaccinated and I like to be one of the first," said Samira at a primary health centre in Damascus where she brought her five year old daughter to be vaccinated.
