Alarmingly, the new system of Universal Credit does not seem to be improving the lot of many care leavers - particularly those with disabilities or children of their own. For example, a 21-year-old whose disability limits their capability for work and who rents a one-bed flat from a housing association, could lose half of their disposal income making a new claim under Universal Credit compared to the old system.
We have only a matter of weeks to stave off these cold-hearted closures. I know that there are MPs across the house, including on the Conservative benches, who see these closures as simply a step too far. Today, I appeal to them: join me, stand up for your constituents and let's work together to stop this rotten policy.
It's time for Ministers to get out of their grand offices, leave the ministerial car behind and come and see how difficult they will make it for thousands of Glaswegians to get to the Job Centre. Perhaps then they will see the damage they will inflict and think again on this extraordinary attack on Scotland's largest city.
