The former political advisor had suffered severe complications after contracting Covid in March 2020.
Derek now receives 21-hour care from Kate herself, as well as carers who come to their family home.
"I know I’m very lucky to have him alive, but yes, I'm also grieving," the Good Morning Britain star told the Sunday Times.
The presenter told fans she was “incredibly moved and humbled by the whole experience” at last week's event, while sharing an update on Derek’s health.
The Good Morning Britain presenter was awarded the honour at Windsor Castle for her services to broadcasting, to journalism and to charity.
