How To Relieve Stress: People On Reddit Share Their Tricks

Music, Knitting, Talking To Dogs And Other Ways People Relieve Stress

Feeling stressed? You're not the only one.

When a Reddit user asked others "how do you relieve stress in your life?" they received over 2,000 comments overnight.

"I am asking this question because for the past few months I have been abstaining from rushing to alcohol, drugs, or sex whenever I feel overwhelmed in my life," user h0w1 said. "It's been rough, especially recently, and I wanted to see how others go about relieving that stress."

Many shared stories of work stress while others listed a bad relationship, sporting injury or university exams as their reason for unease.

Thankfully though, for every stressed person there were dozens of people offering tips on stress-relief.

It seems playing or listening to music is a popular way for people to unwind.

"I had an awful year last year, and I am constantly full of stress and anxiety," user pistachiopaul said. "This year, I bought myself a guitar. I have no sense of rhythm and have never played an instrument before, but it's really been helping."

User zlterry agreed that music can be a fantastic form of therapy. After illness left him unable to play competitive sport, he learned to play the guitar and drums for distraction and hasn't looked back since.

Another user (Classypterodactyl) said knitting helps her to relax.

"I'm not very good at it, but I've managed some nice scarves, hats and mittens. I find it very satisfying to finish a project, whether it's good or bad," she wrote.

"So long as it challenges you and takes your mind off things, the stress goes away. My next big project is a sweater!"

Reading, gardening, meditation and jogging were other popular ways to relieve stress, but Reddit user Lou_Zer gave a rather more unconventional answer.

"I have conversations with my Labradors. I ask them questions, and then answer for them as well. Except, I answer for them in a higher pitched voice, you know, so I know it's them talking," she wrote.

Perhaps less surprisingly, a lot of people said they feel less stressed when they get more sleep.
