Bradley Simmonds On Why His Favourite Workout Is Boxing And The Importance Of Setting Fitness Goals

As far as fitspiration goes, there are a fair few female Instagram stars to follow, but not as many males.

Seeing as we introduced you to Faisal Abdalla, we thought it was about time London-based personal trainer Bradley Simmonds was on your radar. 

With an impressive 166,000 followers (and counting), Simmonds shares his tips on strength training and innovative workouts on social media.

Simmonds is a fitness coach for the stars, including Premier League footballers John Terry and Theo Walcott. His career as a trainer began when his career as a footballer was cut short due to back injuries.

“Despite spending most of my time in the treatment room and gym, I grasped the opportunity to learn from the most qualified trainers and experts in both the fitness and nutrition world,” he said.

For the latest instalment in our ‘Fit Fix’ series, we asked Simmonds about his workouts, training plan and what he eats in a week.

Talk us through your week in fitness.

“In the mornings I like to get up early and do an hour of cardio straight away. For me, this kickstarts the day on a good note and I’m then I’m raring to go.

“In the evenings, I tend to do a mixture of body weight training, weight training and core isolation. I make sure I target each muscle twice a week for maximum results all over.”

What’s your favourite type of workout and why?

“My favourite type of workout is boxing because it engages all of my muscles, improves my fitness levels, burns fat and most importantly, is how I de-stress and switch off from social media and work.”

Do you have rest days? 

“Most Sundays I’ll rest and enjoy time with family and friends.

“You can’t beat a roast dinner on a Sunday whilst watching premier league football.”

What do you eat throughout the week to complement your training schedule?

“I eat a lot of lean protein, mainly chicken and fish, and always have a mountain of vegetables on the side.

“When I’ve worked out, I’ll have some sort of complex carbohydrate with the protein and veg like sweet potato, quinoa or whole grain rice.

“It helps me to recover and gives me the necessary energy I’ve just used up.”

What are your pre and post-workout snacks?

“I like to keep it very simple.

“I’ll grab a banana and a handful of nuts before a workout if I feel I need it and then a protein shake after my session to get that protein inside me to help with recovery.”

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned about food?

“There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself. I absolutely love Jack Daniel glazed ribs with an Oreo milkshake.” 

Motivation πŸ™Œ

Do you have a motivational mantra that keeps you going? 

“My screensaver on my phone says: ‘Train like an athlete, eat like a nutritionist, sleep like a baby and win like a champion’.

“I love a good motivational quote and this is one I try to live by.”

Do you always have fitness goals you are aiming for? 

“I always set myself goals as this is what keep me motivated. There is nothing more rewarding than bettering yourself and reaching the goals you set.

“My current aim is to reach 10% body fat percentage, so I’m getting super lean. I’m currently at 12% so I’m getting there.”

What’s your ultimate workout track and why?

“At the moment I’m loving ‘Hate to Say I Told You So’ by The Hives. It gives me a little fire in my belly before a gruelling workout.

“I guess it’s a little bit about proving people wrong, even myself. I can always do better and I’m always striving to be better.”

Bradley Simmonds will be at Be:FIT London running a HIIT Class in the Reebok fitness studio during the health and wellbeing festival for women on 28-30 April 2017.

Sister Madonna Buder has earned the nickname β€˜The Iron Nun’ having completed more than 40 Ironman races in the past 30 years.

She completed her first Ironman race - comprising of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run - in 1985, aged 65.

At 75, she became the oldest woman to ever complete an Ironman triathlon and at 82, she set a world record as the oldest Ironman triathlon competitor.

She says faith, listening to her body and maintaining a positive attitude to her physical endurance have enabled her to succeed.

Not only did Diana Green survive breast cancer, but on her 82nd birthday she ran the 2016 London Marathon to raise money for cancer research.

Speaking to HuffPost UK before the race she said: β€œThe crowds are so wonderful, they really spur you on. I’m excited to be starting in the VIP section and spying some celebs!”

French cyclist Robert Marchand, aged 105, recently set a world record on his bike covering 14.08 miles in one hour.

Afterwards he said he would've beaten his time if he hadn't missed a sign telling him he had 10 minutes left to cycle.

"Otherwise I would have gone faster, I would have posted a better time," he told Associated Press. "I'm not tired."

At 100 years old, Jean Dawson is still a picture of health thanks to over 30 years of dedication to yoga.

She has been bending and twisting her body almost every single week for the past three decades.

β€œI really enjoy doing yoga," she said. "It has really changed my life and has helped cure aches and pains.

"I use to have trouble from a slipped disc in my back but doing yoga really helped me cope with it.”

In May 2016, Ella Mae Colbert set a new world record for the 100-meter dash, just one week after her 100th birthday.

Colbert has been running track since her school days and despite falling on her first attempt, she smashed the previous record for 100-year-old runners (which was 1 minute 17 seconds) and crossed the finish line in 46.791 seconds.

Dr Charles Eugster is a bodybuilder and sprinter who has set numerous world records in his age group for races ranging from 60 meters to 400 meters.

The 97-year-old, who refers to retirement as "one of the worst things that you can do to yourself", said he got into fitness late on in life.

According to Today.com, he began serious weight training when he was 87 and didn't start running until he turned 95.

"By the time you get to 85 you may have lost about 50 percent of your muscle mass and power, so I think it's extremely important in your older age to do everything you can to build muscle," he added.
