However You Identify We Must All Be Trans Allies

The constant policing of my gender expression leads me on to my next point, which is that homophobia and transphobia are much cosier bedfellows than people realise. As a butch woman I get shot not-so-sideways glances all the time when I walk into women's toilets - this is homophobic and transphobic, and sexist as well. That's why I think it's 100%, uncompromisingly vital to be an ally to trans people.

Britain Is No Longer Considered A Safe Part Of The World For Trans People To Live In

Many mainstream media voices - from newspaper columnists to social media commentators - seem to have stepped up a gear over recent months in their attempts to make vile transphobia acceptable, questioning the right of trans people to even exist. This isn't something that is open for debate. And giving the green light to these messages has devastating real-world consequences for trans people.

The Conservatives Have Improved LGBT Rights - They Must Ensure The DUP Do Not Stifle Progress

If such a partnership is pursued, The Conservatives - at the very least - have an opportunity and an obligation to demonstrate to their partners in the DUP why they too need to think again about LGBT people, our rights and our needs, and start actively working to achieve equality for LGBT people in Northern Ireland. It's vital that the Conservative Party stand firm on LGBT equality, and the Prime Minister makes that clear from the outset.

The Forced Fall Of The Turing Bill Is Offensive and Hurtful

Instead of taking the Bill to the next stage, where it would have been possible to iron out differences, parliamentary procedures were used to force the Bill to fall. This is an underhanded political tactic, and, regardless of intention, it is deeply hurtful and offensive.

International Women's Day 2016

This International Women's Day I am whole-heartedly behind the idea of making a #pledgeforparity. We all have a responsibility for working towards gender equality. To do this we need to give everyone the chance to express their experience of gender inequality and to listen to these experiences and to not dismiss them. And we can't do that unless we understand that there's no us and them.

Sport Needs Positive Role Models

Tyson Fury's comments also touched on another important area of our work. He claimed his views were rooted in the Bible. It's often assumed that people of faith can't be LGBT or respect LGBT people. By suggesting his homophobia is rooted in his faith he has helped perpetuate this damaging myth.

There's Still Much More to Do

At the beginning of the election campaign we outlined four key things which we believe, if tackled, will have a positive impact on the LGBT community. The first of these was a tangible commitment to help combat homophobic, biphobic and transphobic hate crime. With the exception of the SNP and Ukip, this featured in the manifestos of almost all the major political parties; a great first step, but we must see this translated into real action with the next government... We're at an extremely important point in the LGBT movement where, if we have any hope of achieving full equality, complacency is not an option. We've read the manifestos and we'll remember the commitments. We hope that whoever is elected on 7 May will do the same.

What Should LGBT People Fear From the Next Government? Complacency.

The last five years have included some real successes for the LGBT community and some progress for trans communities. The most memorable for many is finally being able to legally marry their husband or wife. However, while I welcome this with open arms, the achievements of this government also present a big risk for the LGBT community. That risk is complacency.
