Disney+ Tried To Edit Daryl Hannah's Bum Out Of Splash Using CGI... And It Did Not Go Well

The unfortunate censorship choice has been compared to the visual effects in Cats.

As well as the obvious animated classics the film studio is best known for, Disney’s recently-launched streaming service boasts an impressive catalogue that includes a select few live-action offerings, including 10 Things I Hate About You, Sister Act and Mrs Doubtfire.

However, to keep things family-friendly, Disney+ has had to exercise a bit of censorship with certain films, and it turns out that not all of it has been totally seamless.

One such casualty is Splash, the romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, which tells the story of Allen and Madison, a young man and a mermaid who fall in love.

When the two first meet, Daryl’s character is naked, and swims into the sea after kissing Allen on the lips.

In the original scene – as depicted in the video above – viewers saw the briefest of glimpses of Daryl’s bare backside when she ran into the water, but as film fan Allison Pregler pointed out, this moment has been given a less-than-smooth makeover in its Disney+ edit.

Comparing Disney’s handling of the scene to the CGI seen in the recent Cats film, she joked: “Disney+ didn’t want butts on their platform so they edited Splash with digital fur technology.”

And as you can imagine, people had plenty to say after seeing the clip in question…

HuffPost UK has contacted Disney+ for comment.
