African students in Wuhan, China have been stuck indoors for over a month as the area is on lock down to contain the Coronavirus spread. Nine African countries including South Africa, Mauritania and Morocco have evacuated, or have said they will evacuate so far. But students from other African countries have said they feel left behind and sad their country has not brought them home.
There has been a landmark discovery in Ethiopia, of a nearly complete skull of an early human ancestor that lived 3.8 million years ago. The species possessed an intriguing mixture of ape-like and human-like characteristics.
International trade in elephant ivory will remain banned, according to a vote at the World Wildlife Conference, known as CITES, in Switzerland. The decision comes despite a request by several African nations to sell government-owned ivory stockpiles.

A plane has crashed in Ethiopia, killing all 157 passengers, seven of whom were British. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but it is the second disaster involving this new type of aircraft from Boeing, in the past five months.
Africa cannot be buttonholed into either a backdrop of starving children with swollen bellies or a land of milk and honey. But it is still in need of saviours, and some of them are going to be white.
