Born to German parents living in Singapore, Matthias Hoene wasbrought up in a multicultural environment, where he learned fourlanguages and explored Singapore’s rural and urban jungles. Atan early age, his family relocated to West Berlin, where life proved to be decidedly different.
A far cry from the hustle and bustle of ultra-modern Singapore, Matthias moved to a new home nestled in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. Accustomed to living under the watchful eyes of East German border guards, he was there, pickaxe in hand, when the Wall came down in 1989.
Keen to see more of the world, Matthias went on to study at the famous St. Martins College in London, where he specialized in graphic design and filmmaking. It was there that he picked up his first film camera and immediately discovered the perfect outlet for his passions for drawing, photography and storytelling. His first short film, Rhapsodia in Fish Minor, won the 2000 JVC film festival in Tokyo. His second short, Love Me Tender, went on to win the East London film festival.
