Boards play a vital role in the governance and leadership of organisations, and to ensure that they fulfil their remit, they have to be boards with the energy, courage, purpose and intellect to make a difference. Since the Government announced the withdrawal of student funding for would-be nurses last year, we are already hearing of a 20% drop in applications for graduate nursing courses. And the 1% pay cap on salaries is not helping to encourage people into nursing and is making existing nurses reconsider whether they can even afford to continue. If the NHS wants to achieve a clean bill of health, we need to ensure there is adequate staffing, funding, resource and education. The health of the nation is at stake.
As Brits we are often so polite that even if we receive shoddy service or experience faulty products, we rarely complain. We smile, thank the person providing us with the terrible meal and go home cross, but simply muttering under our breaths! However it is actually really important to complain so it is time we did more of it...
In summary - only try to engage with residents if you actually intend to listen to, and value, what they say and can actually help them to achieve what they want to achieve. Obviously I get it right all the time.
The UK - and therefore its population - is living way beyond its means. We have a Balance of Payments deficit of about 7% of GDP means that, on average, we are all enjoying a standard of living which is 7% higher than we are earning. To support this unrealistic life-style we are either borrowing from abroad or selling assets to foreign interests year after year on a scale unmatched by any other developed country.
My biggest fear is that the referendum result will totally monopolise the time and energy of Ministers and MPs. As a country we cannot afford to slip into another period of nothing happening on the public service reform front. The public would not thank Westminster politicians for three years of nothing but Brexit.
