Jack Wilshere could return for Arsenal before the end of the season after he was given the go-ahead to step up his recovery from an ankle injury.

Manager Arsene Wenger however did preach caution over the injury-hit 21-year-old playing again this campaign, as the Gunners lie in fourth spot after back-to-back victories against Tottenham and Liverpool.

Wenger said: "We have good news but Jack isn't close to a comeback."

"The last scan was good and he can start to jog again so he is on the way back but we have to be very cautious with him," Sky Sports News reported him to have said.

Wilshere appears to be taking medical staff's advice:

Wilshere has not played a competitive match since England's European Championship qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley in June last year.

An ankle injury suffered in pre-season's Emirates Cup was expected to keep the midfielder out until February. But that was compounded when he recently suffered a stress fracture to his foot, which has further delayed any possible return before the season concludes on 13 May.

He made 49 appearances for the Gunners in 2010/11, scoring two goals.
