Stuart Broad was heckled and called a "w****r" by disgruntled Australians, but the England bowler's actions spoke loudest as he took five wickets at the Gabba in the opening Ashes Test.

Broad is the Englishman Australians love to, and are encouraged to, hate following his controversial role in last summer's 3-0 Ashes victory, and he duly gave them five more reasons to do so.

He was the driving force as the hosts were reduced to 132 for six by mid-afternoon - before Brad Haddin (78no) and Mitchell Johnson (64) redressed the balance in a much-needed century stand on the way to a stumps total of 273 for eight, which was still below par after Australia had chosen to bat in sunny conditions.

Predictably booed when announced to bowl the second over after a James Anderson maiden, Broad took the first wicket of the series with just 12 runs on the board and went on to take the next three.

"There was a lot of build-up to this tour, a lot of talk, but we know it's about preparing for Test cricket," Broad told Sky Sports after play had ended for the day. "On a belting batting wicket, we've put ourselves in a strong position.

"I'd prepared myself for boos and a bit of stick, but I quite enjoyed it. It certainly feels better with five wickets. The Aussies are tough fans but they respect good sport.

"We've had a tough day, it was hard work. There's some tired guys in our changing room, but very happy ones."

The Nottinghamshire bowler finish with an outstanding five for 65, with James Anderson claiming two other scalps and Chris Tremlett dismissing Steven Smith.
