Jonathan Woodgate has re-signed for boyhood club Middlesbrough, subject to a medical, after his contract expired with Stoke City.

The 32-year-old centre-back initially joined Boro on loan from Real Madrid in 2006, before signing a permanent deal for £7m in April 2007. He was sold to Tottenham Hotspur nine months later for £8m after making 46 appearances.

The Teeside club, managed by Tony Mowbray, finished seventh in the Championship last season - five points off the playoff places.

Woodgate spent the 2011/12 season at the Britannia Stadium, playing in just 21 games for Stoke, with his last appearance coming in the Europa League against Valencia in February.

A promising defender since breaking through at Leeds United when he was 19, Woodgate's career has been curtailed by injuries, ensuring his best form has come sporadically.

The former Newcastle United defender has generated £37.4m in transfer fees throughout his career over six different clubs, and he has won just eight England caps.
