Manchester United and Arsenal have announced the clubs have agreed a deal for the transfer of Robin van Persie.

The move is still subject to the Dutchman passing a medical, but after it was revealed this morning both clubs had re-commenced negotiations United look set to sign the striker for £24m.

"Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Arsenal Football Club for the transfer of Robin van Persie.

"The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course."

Arsenal added the Dutchman, on international duty with Holland this evening, "will travel to Manchester on Thursday" as he looks to finalise his transfer.

If he moves to Old Trafford, Van Persie will become the first player to join the Red Devils from Arsenal since Viv Anderson - Sir Alex Ferguson's first ever signing - in 1987.

Manchester City and Juventus were the two other clubs both interested in signing the 29-year-old, but last week it was reported Van Persie had told Juventus he was only interested in signing for United.

Van Persie was named the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Player of the Year for 2011/12 after he scored 37 goals for the Gunners during another trophyless campaign.

He has only won one trophy in his eight years with the club since signing for £2.5m from Feyenoord - an FA Cup win in his first season in which he scored in the penalty shootout against United.

Bidding goodbye at the Hawthorns

Arsenal, who have signed Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla as they give their attack an exciting makeover, may now turn their attentions to Athletic Club Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente, who like Van Persie has refused to extend his contract which expires next summer.
