Mesut Özil's slump in form was noticed by Germany supporters during their 1-0 win over Chile as he was jeered by them as he was substituted.

Although the Arsenal forward Özil assisted Mario Götze's first-half winner, he was afforded an unflattering farewell by the Stuttgart crowd when Germany coach Joachim Löw brought him off in the 89th minute.

Some of Özil's teammates were visibly appalled by the supporters' reaction, with defender Jerome Boateng later commenting: "They have some nerve. You can't shine all the time."

The national team manager, Oliver Bierhoff, added: "I don't understand the whistling. I find it a shame that a player such as Mesut is picked out [for that kind of reaction]. I would hope for different support for a game like that."

Özil's place in the Germany side is under serious threat from Götze, although Löw could opt to play the pair of them in an attacking trio alongside Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus, with Thomas Müller moved up front.

He has not started Arsenal's last two matches following his crucial penalty miss against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Özil provided the telling pass into the area for Götze to blast into the top corner in the 16th minute but Chile arguably emerged from the friendly as the more satisfied side.

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to make a couple of timely saves and on the one occasion he was beaten, Eduardo Vargas saw his strike cannon off the crossbar.

"You can say it was a lucky win," Germany captain Philipp Lahm admitted, while Löw added Germany "weren't capable of dominating the game".
