Benfica's Europa League final defeat to Sevilla was not just their second successive final defeat in the competition, but their eighth consecutive European final defeat, dating back 52 years. It is known as the "Béla curse".

Béla Guttman was a Hungarian coach who guided Benfica to back-to-back European Cup wins in 1961 and 1962. He was denied a pay rise after the second triumph and quit, declaring the club would never win another European title.
