England's record against Poland is, with a couple of disastrous exceptions in 1973, a favourable one.

One year on from the rain-sodden farce in Warsaw, the weather was just the latest addition to a history which involves the effective end of England's greatest defender, a clown, hat-tricks and Jack Charlton co-commentating badly during the September 1999 Euro 2000 qualifier.

1973, WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

A rare sight as England wore yellow, but it wasn't like watching Brazil in what was Bobby Moore's final competitive appearance. Sir Alf Ramsey's side lost 2-0, and Moore was dropped for the return match.

When dropped, Moore allegedly asked Ramsey if he was no longer required at international level. "Of course not. I need you as my captain at the World Cup next year." Brian Clough called Poland goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski a clown, too, but the clown was up the other end.

Peter Shilton's terrible error gifted Jan Domarski and Poland a crucial goal which was not overturned. England failed to reach the 1974 World Cup and Ramsey was sacked. Clough still called Tomaszewski a clown.

Here's Barry Davies in a more joyous mood, as Peter Beardsley and Gary Lineker eviscerated the Poles in Mexico '86.

1996, WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

David Beckham, in just his second game for England, showcased the vision he remains capable of displaying 12 years on for Alan Shearer's first in a 2-1 Wembley win.

1999, EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER

Kevin Keegan's first match in charge of England and Poland's last visit to Wembley, Paul Scholes hit his one and only hat-trick for the Three Lions to give then caretaker Keegan a winning start.
