Manchester United's new signing Shinji Kagawa has rejected the chance to play in the club's famed number seven shirt.

The Japanese international was widely expected to don the kit number following Michael Owen's departure, but he insisted he was not ready to accept the honour.

"I've just joined the team and haven't accomplished anything yet. I want to make a name for myself [at United] on my own terms," the 23-year-old said.

George Best, Steve Coppell, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo are the most significant names to have worn the most renowned squad number at Old Trafford.

Kagawa's signing was confirmed last week as he penned a four-year contract at United, who paid Borussia Dortmund around £17m for the attacking midfielder.

In 2011/12, Kagawa scored 17 and assisted 13 goals for Dortmund, who won the league and cup double in Germany.
