Brendon McCullum became the first New Zealand player to score a triple century in Test cricket after making 302 in the second Test against India at Wellington.

The draw means the Kiwis won the series 1-0 as India's struggles overseas continued.

McCullum went into the final day's play at the Basin Reserve on 281 and he added the 19 runs he needed to seal his place in the history books before falling soon after when he edged Zaheer Khan behind to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The 32-year-old Black Caps captain faced 559 balls in total and struck 32 fours and four sixes as he comfortably passed his previous-best first-class score of 225.

McCullum's 302 is the best by a New Zealand player at this level, beating the 299 made by Martin Crowe against Sri Lanka in 1991, also at Wellington.

Former West Indies star Brian Lara holds the world record with an unbeaten 400 against England in Antigua in 2004.

McCullum's dismissal left New Zealand on 625 for seven and a lead of 379 over India as the second Test appeared destined for a draw.
