Jermain Defoe has signed a new three-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur.

Conjecture had surrounded Defoe, who has scored 119 goals during two spells with Spurs, after he spoke of his "heartbreak" at being a substitute on a regular basis under Harry Redknapp last season.

However the fans' favourite has committed his future to the club under new boss André Villas-Boas despite the arrival of £5m striker Emmanuel Adebayor and with the club expected to sign another forward before Friday's transfer deadline.

Defoe has featured for the Lilywhites 286 times, having first been bought in January 2004 from West Ham United for £7m.

He was sold to Portsmouth in 2008 for £7.5m but returned to the club a year later, scoring on his second home 'debut' against Pompey.
