Leeds United hammered FC Gherdeina 16-0 in northern Italy but fell one goal short of registering an "unlucky" 17th.

Six goals from Matt Smith and three from Noel Hunt decimated the amateur opponents in Santa Cristina as Leeds recorded their biggest pre-season win since the 15-0 rout of Swedish club Byske back in 1999.

However owner Massimo Cellino, who hates the number 17 so much he has axed goalkeeper Paddy Kenny because he was born on the 17th day, saw his new side stop at sweet 16.

Steve Morison and Dominic Poleon both bagged a brace and Lewis Walters, David Norris and Luke Murphy also got on the scoresheet.
