Nicolas Anelka Told Not To Repeat 'Quenelle' Gesture By West Brom

Nicolas Anelka has been told not to repeat his controversial quenelle gesture by West Brom.

Anelka is accused of making an anti-Semitic statement with his celebration after scoring at West Ham on Saturday, and could face a lengthy suspension from the Football Association.

West Brom said the 34-year-old was asked to explain the action following their 3-3 draw at Upton Park by caretaker coach Keith Downing, and he explained it was dedicated to his French comedian friend Dieudonne. The gesture has been linked to anti-Semitism in his homeland.

Anelka defended his celebration on Twitter on Saturday night

However, the club have revealed they do not want Anelka to do it again and the Frenchman has agreed.

Nicolas Anelka Defends Alleged Anti-Semitic Celebration

A Baggies statement said:

“Upon reporting for training this morning, Nicolas was asked by sporting and technical director Richard Garlick to give a full explanation about his goal celebration, during which he again strongly denied intending to cause offence.

“The Club fully acknowledges that Nicolas’ goal celebration has caused offence in some quarters and has asked Nicolas not to perform the gesture again. Nicolas immediately agreed to adhere to this request.

“The Club is aware that The Football Association is investigating the matter and has offered its full co-operation. The Club will continue to make its own enquiries – a process which will remain confidential between the Club and Nicolas."
