Villas-Boas was sacked on 4 March by Chelsea, but has remained in London and the Premier League as he succeeds Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane.

Villas-Boas said:

“Tottenham Hotspur is a great club with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and throughout the world. I feel privileged to be its coach. For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching positions in the Premier League. I have had several discussions with the Chairman and the Board and I share their vision for the future progress of the Club. This is a squad any coach would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead."

Villas-Boas' first-team fitness coach Jose Mario Rocha and Daniel Sousa, head of opposition scouting will join him at the Lane.

Chairman Daniel Levy added:

"We are constantly looking to move the Club forward. It is important that we now look to develop the potential within the squads at all levels, whilst strengthening the First Team in the summer in key positions with players who will become part of the future success of the Club.”

The 34-year-old Portuguese oversaw 40 matches while in charge of the Stamford Bridge club in 2011/12, winning 19, drawing 11 and losing 10.

Prior to that he guided FC Porto to the Portuguese Primeira Liga and cup tournament, as well as the Europa League in 2010/11. The Dragões remained unbeaten for the entire league campaign.

Redknapp was fired in June after three-and-a-half-years with the Lilywhites, whom he guided into the Champions League in his first full season.

However his perceived flirting with the England manager's job and Spurs' regression after Fabio Capello's resignation on 8 February culminated in his dismissal a month-and-a-half after the season ended.

HuffPost UK Sport can reveal Spurs enquired about Jose Mourinho's availability whilst Redknapp was still in his job earlier this year, but contrary to reports the former Chelsea boss desired a return to the Premier League, his representatives privately confirmed he would remain with Real Madrid.

New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Everton's David Moyes were two other coaches monitored, with the latter installed as favourite by several bookmakers after Redknapp was sacked.

Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last season but were denied a Champions League pre-qualifying berth due to Chelsea winning the competition against Bayern Munich.

Villas-Boas will begin his north London career away to Newcastle on 18 August, and is scheduled to face his former club on 20 October at White Hart Lane, with the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge on 13 April.
