Xabi Alonso has dismissed reports of a possible return to Liverpool.

The 31-year-old has also been linked with a transfer to Chelsea, but Alonso poured scorn on suggestions he could play in the Premier League next season.

“The Premier League? No,” was the player’s response when asked whether he might consider a move to his former club or José Mourinho's Chelsea. “No way, no chance."

Alonso spent five years at Anfield and was a key member of Rafael Benítez's Reds squad before he joined Madrid for £30 million in 2009.

His contract expires next year and with Madrid likely to sign Asier Illarramendi as his long-term replacement this summer, the former Real Sociedad man could leave on a free in 2014.

The Basque midfielder was omitted from Vicente del Bosque's 23-man party for the Confederations Cup but La Roja's 3-0 final defeat to Spain, as well as Xavi's laboured display, could see him return to the international fold.
