Wayne Rooney gave United the lead inside the first minute against a vulnerable Bayern side, but Sir Alex Ferguson's pragmatic tactics - and a Gary Neville nightmare - backfired. Neville's concession of a free-kick enabled Franck Ribéry to equalise, via a deflection, and after Nemanja Vidić rattled the crossbar Ivica Olić pounced on the dithering Patrice Evra to win the game late on. United promised a European night to rank with their demolitions of Porto and Roma in 1997 and 2007 when they raced into a 2-0 lead inside seven minutes. Nani, enjoying one of his finest hours in a red shirt, made it 3-0 in the 41st minute but Michael Carrick, about to endure one of his worst nights in a red shirt, feebly allowed Olić to pull one back. After the pause, Rafael da Silva was sent off, Bayern won a corner, Carrick was caught ball-watching and Arjen Robben volleyed into the corner of the net to send Bayern through on away goals. Billed as the biggest mis-match between the sides, a blunt Bayern side struggled against an organised United rearguard and were in danger of a surprise defeat when Nemanja Vidić's arched header gave United the advantage.
